This month's health focus is on cancer fighting superfoods!
Just like for any health concern the first step is to eat as many whole, real foods as possible while greatly reducing or even eliminating highly processed and sugar-laden items. Plants should be the base of any healthy diet, especially when cancer is a concern. These plants, especially vegetables and fruit, contain large amounts of phytochemicals, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. These compounds help to remove toxins and neutralize free radicals.
In today's session, I demonstrated a simple turkey burger that includes spinach, red bell pepper, and uses almond flour in place of breadcrumbs. These freeze wonderfully, making them perfect for batch cooking!
The compounds found in mushrooms are especially powerful in cancer prevention and management. Sautéing them with a healthy fat, like ghee or avocado oil and combining with another vegetable like asparagus is a great way to pile on the goodness!
Finally, choosing healthy snacks is a challenge for many people. Hummus, or another bean dip, is a great option. Using it as a dip for fresh crunchy veggies helps boost those phytochemical levels! Although it is easy to purchase pre-made hummus it usually contains preservatives and unhealthy oils. Making it yourself is so simple! Plus, you can tailor it to your tastes by adding in some roasted vegetables, spices, and or herbs!
